About the project

A Time Traveller's Guide to Bristol explores the evolution of seven locations in Bristol - Park Street, Redcliff Hill, the Harbour, Stokes Croft, Broadmead, Castle Park and Bristol Zoo - over the past 100 years.

Through a website and an iPhone app residents and visitors can use the guide to experience the city’s history wherever they are. Lottery funding was used to employ a researcher, editor and sound engineer to undertake a year of research and develop the digital aspects of the project.

The search uncovered some fascinating material, such as film recordings made by a local man dating back to the 1960s including a video of elephants walking down Park Street when the circus was in town. By using digital elements and running workshops the project attracted young people to explore Bristol’s history and imagine what the city would like in the future. Their predictions, which feature in the final project, were brought to life by a local architectural company.
