The Lower Ormeau Residents Action Group was established in 1987 as a vehicle for change and a voice for local people. Its community centre was a focal point for the local community, but since the old council Leisure Centre closed down over a decade ago there were no sports facilities available.
The group was successful in applying for National Lottery funding that transformed the centre with a new extension and refurbishment, adding a 3G synthetic football ground, several changing rooms, a fitness suite and reception area. As well as providing the facilities, the Centre is also proactive in encouraging participation with projects.
The provision of a football pitch led to the creation of an 11-a-side team, with members of the community turning out to watch and volunteering to help out. Doleras Rea, who attends Older & Active, says: “This is a fantastic building with so much going on for the community. Without projects like Older & Active we would be stuck in the house feeling sorry for ourselves. We didn’t have anything like this when I was growing up but now my children use the fitness suite and my grandchildren use the project for sports and dancing.”
