How the funding search works

The funding search uses your answers about the location of your project’s beneficiaries (question 1), you (question 2) and how much you want to apply for (question 4) to come up with a list of suitable programmes. It will only list programmes that meet all of these criteria.

Then the funding search uses your answers about your project (question 3) to identify which of these programmes is best suited to your project and puts them in the best match order.

Search tips

The success of each search depends on the accuracy of the information that you enter about your project.  Use the help notes to see a description of the each of the possible answers. You will find the help notes by hovering over the answer with the cursor or mouse.

For question 1 you should select the country where the people who will benefit from the funding will live. This could be different from where you are based or where the project will take place. For example, if you are based in England and will be taking children from Scotland overseas for an educational trip, you should select Scotland, as this is where the children who will benefit from the trip live.

If you will be working with people from more than one country, you should tick as many countries as apply.

For question 2 you should only select one answer. Pick the one that best describes the organisation or individual who will apply for the grant. Joint applicants or applicants that would like to apply as a consortium should select the answer that describes the lead organisation.

For question 3 you can select as many keywords as apply to your project. Use the keywords that best describe what your project is going to do and how you are going to do it. Select the answers that are most important to your project. If you don’t find your search results helpful, you can run the search again with less or more keywords or different keywords.

For question 4 you should select the one answer that fits the amount of funding that you are applying for – this may be different from the full costs of your project.

Search results

The results will be presented in best match order. This means that we will give you a percentage on how your keywords matched the funding programme. Programmes with the highest percentage will be listed first. If two or more programmes have the same percentage, we will list those programmes in alphabetical order. You can print the results of your search and you can click from the results page to more information on each programme. Because we update the funding search on a monthly basis, you will not be able to save the results.

It is possible to run an unlimited number of searches, so if you’re not happy with the results of your search, you can review your answers and run the search again.

Funding programmes do change and Lottery Funding will update the funding search on a monthly basis, so rather than work from out-of-date results, please try running the search again.

What next?

The search results can only ever provide general information about suitable programmes. Lottery funders’ rules about what they can and can’t fund vary and they have different priorities about the projects they are able to fund. It’s worth researching a funding programme thoroughly before you apply and we recommend that you talk to the Lottery funder about your project. You can click through from the results page to more information about the programme as well as contact details for the relevant Lottery funder.
