Arts Council England works to get great art to everyone by championing, developing and investing in artistic experiences that enrich people's lives. As the national development agency for the arts, we support a range of artistic activities from theatre to music, literature to dance, photography to digital art, carnival to crafts. Great art inspires us, brings us together and teaches us about ourselves and the world around us. In short, it makes life better. Between 2008 and 2011 we will invest in excess of £1.6 billion of public money from the government and the National Lottery to create these experiences for as many people as possible across the country.

Types of scheme (open / closed / targeted)
Grants for the arts is a continuous programme so you can apply at any time. Our grants are for time limited, self contained activities.
Geographical coverage
The activity must take place mainly in England. There are some exceptions to this, for example, when artists or arts organisations are involved in professional development activities in other countries. Applications can be accepted from individuals or organisations based (living) in the European Union.
Any priority areas and key messages (for example, partnership funding)
We have identified four development priorities for the next three years 2008-11
- Digital opportunity
- Visual Arts
- Children & young people
- London 2012
By ‘diversity’, we mean the full range and diversity of the culture of this country. In some cases our focus will be on race and ethnic background and in others on disability.
There is a high demand for our grants. We have to make difficult choices about which applications to support. We look at four areas to help us make those decisions.
The following areas help us to take an overview of how we can increase access to arts activity at the same time as giving different types of applicants access to our funding:
- Is the application from an individual or organisation that has not received any funding from us
- Will the application increase arts activity in places which have limited or no opportunities for people to engage with arts activity?
- Will the application increase engagement in arts activity by people who have little or no engagement with arts activity
- Will the application develop the arts sector
Application process (formal deadlines)
There are no deadlines or programme closure dates for Grants for the arts as it is a rolling programme. You can apply using the current application pack on our website.
