Arts Council England is the national development agency for the arts. Between 2005 and 2008 we are investing £1.7 billion of public funds from government and the National Lottery. We believe that the arts have the power to transform lives and communities, and to create opportunities for people throughout the country.

Types of scheme (open / closed / targeted)
Grants for the arts are for individuals and organisations.
Our grants are for time-limited activities.
Geographical coverage
Grants for the arts are for activities that benefit people in England or that help artists and arts organisations from England to carry out their work. There are some exceptions to this, for example, when artists are involved in professional development activities in other countries. Applications can be accepted from individuals or organisations based (living) in the European Union.
Any priority areas and key messages (for example, partnership funding)
- Grants for the arts help us to deliver our Ambitions for the arts which are:
- supporting the artist·enabling organisations to thrive not just survive
- championing diversity
- offering opportunities for young people
- encouraging growth.
By ‘diversity’, we mean the full range and diversity of the culture of this country. In some cases our focus will be on race and ethnic background and in others on disability.
There is a high demand for our grants. We have to make difficult choices about which applications to support. Our priorities are one of the tools which help us to do this.
We look at whether your application:
- is from an individual or organisation that has not received funding from us before
- will benefit areas of the country with social deprivation (social and economic problems) or communities at risk of ‘social exclusion’ (not being able to take part fully in society because of, for example, poverty, prejudice or isolation)
- will benefit areas of the country or communities that have limited cultural opportunities, and
- will contribute to arts development, regionally or nationally (or both)
Application process (formal deadlines)
There are no deadlines or programme closure dates for Grants for the arts as it is a rolling programme. You can apply using the current application pack on our website.
