Project Name

World Track Cycling Championships 2005

What is the project?

UK Sport funded athletes from the British cycling team competed for World titles in Los Angeles in March 2005.   We fund 29 Olympic and Paralympic sports to ensure athletes with genuine medal hopes at major championships have all the support they need to compete and win at the highest level. The programmes are designed to cover a four year period, usually an Olympiad, and the money funds various areas of preparation including training by world class coaches, sports science and medicine back-up, athlete development programmes and appropriate training facilities.

Who gave the money?

UK Sport

What was the grant programme?

World Class Performance Programme (WCPP)

How much was given?

British Cycling will receive a total of £7,920,000 from a period running from 2005 to after the Beijing Olympics in 2008.

Why was the project so good?

Cycling is a priority sport, along with sports such as athletics, rowing and sailing, for which the prioritisation criteria includes medal potential. Team GB finished the 2005 World Track Cycling Championships with four gold medals, and two thirds of the squad returned with a World Champion title.
