Trees of our future

What is the project?

The Trees of our Future project set out to conserve native tree species of local origin throughout Northern Ireland, and to provide people with the knowledge and skills needed to care for their own woodland heritage. It aimed to raise people’s awareness of Northern Ireland’s depleted woodland and to encourage practical involvement in natural heritage.

The Heritage Lottery Fund grant funded the appointment of a project co-ordinator for three years, the setting-up of a website, distribution of a leaflet giving practical information about trees and workshops.  The workshops looked at seed collection, planting and aftercare, and identifying and conserving native tree species.  They targeted young people and were based in both rural and urban locations. The project also included training courses for teachers and youth workers on growing trees from seed, woodland management and fundraising.

Who gave the money?

Heritage Lottery Fund

What was the grant programme?

Heritage Grant, grants of £50,000 or more

How much was given?

£109,500

Where is the project located?

The project was based at Conservation Volunteers Northern Ireland’s (CVNI) tree nursery at Bangor, Co. Down.

Why was this project so good?

CVNI used the grant to build on their existing work to reach out to new audiences and created new skills within the groups and communities that were involved in the project. Workshop sessions reached over 900 children and adults, helping to increase awareness and understanding of the natural heritage.

The project provided education and learning opportunities, particularly for children and young people. It contributed to environmental sustainability, and habitat and species conservation. The project had a strong element of community involvement and provided training for volunteers.
