What is the project?
The project involved the creation of a database of Shetland place names. A project off
icer and volunteer co-ordinator were employed to involve volunteers, who were given training in carrying out research. Much of their work involved interviews with the crofting community. The results of the project have been made accessible through a GIC database.
Who gave the money?
Heritage Lottery Fund
What was the grant programme?
Heritage Grants, grants of £50,000 or more
How much was given?
£54,100
Where is the project located?
Lerwick, Shetland, Scotland
Why was this project so good?
The project created a lasting record of local place names. Many of these names are being lost due to a decline in traditional crofting, and the local dialect. It raised an interest in and awareness of the value of place names throughout the Shetlands and created a trained volunteer workforce who will be able to pass on their skills.
