The girls also receive informal advice on healthy living which includes dietary support and information on how to stop smoking. The longer-term aim of the project is for the girls to become ‘physically active’.
Who gave the money?
Sports Council Wales
What was the grant programme?
Various
How much was given?
The Sports Council for Wales contributed £10,000 as part of its Women and Girls programme (money was provided by a number of different Lottery schemes). Every local authority was given the opportunity to get 100 per cent funding towards projects that would target women and secondary school age girls.
Where is the project located?
Caerphilly, Wales
Why was this project so good?
This project will provide a health related exercise programme for 11-18 year old young women in six facilities in the Upper Rhymney Valley. This is largely a Communities First area with high levels of social and economic deprivation and the health problems that are associated with such an area.
The funding will be used as a catalyst to engage young women in activities that they could not otherwise get locally. It is taking 'healthy living' into the heart of the communities that need it most. The grant will also provide local communities with the skills and the ambition to continue the project and take ownership in the future.
